Rootbound in the Hills #126:
20 Feb 1990

by Rocky Macy

Where were you in World War II? If your answer to that question is at Camp Crowder, MO, then Rootbound has something important to share. Please read on...

We have recently run across a copy of the Camp Crowder Comrade, a unique newsletter for veterans of the camp published by June POWERS, the coordinator of the Camp Crowder Museum at Crowder College in Neosho. The publication serves to update veterans on what their buddies are doing today. Mrs. POWERS has over two hundred subscribers to the newsletter and is actively looking for more. For further information, please write to June POWERS, Camp Crowder Comrade, Crowder College, Neosho, MO 64850. And remember to tell June that you heard about her good work through Rootbound!

Donna LONON (201 Avenue C, Waxahachie, TX 75165) is seeking assistance in tracking her Arkansas ancestry. The surnames that she is after include BETTIS, GREEN, HARGRAVES, LONON, ROWLAND, SMITH, TALBERT, and TAYLOR in Marion Baxter, and Fulton Counties. Donna is most interested in Jefferson TAYLOR and Elizabeth GREEN who were married in 1855 in Fulton County and died in the early 1900's in Baxter County.

William W. LONON and his wife, Sarah C. ROWLAND, natives of Arkansas who relocated to Republic, MO, are also targets of Donna LONON's research, as is Louisa SMITH. Louisa (born 1835, Hardin County, TN) married Simeon HARGRAVES in 1855. She was a sister to John Hensley SMITH. Who were their parents?

Donna LONON (address above) writes a genealogy column, Missing Links, for the local newspaper in Waxahachie, a city that is approximately thirty-five miles south of Dallas. She would welcome genealogical queries from our readers which deal with north or central Texas. The queries are printed free.

Joyce SMITH WALKER (2801 Rodeo Road, No. B-205, Santa Fe, NM 87505) is searching for information on Harriet Jane REID, bor 13 April 1843 in Missouri or Arkansas to John Samuel and Sarah (BLAND McFARLAND) REID. Harriet married Eli Paulen KATTES in Bell County, TX, on 19 Oct 1876. Eli resided at one time in Newton County, MO. Harriet died 8 Nov 1901 in the Sugarloaf community of Coryell County, TX. Which of our readers can assist Joyce with her genealogy?

Nancy B. SAMUELSON (139 Chapin Road, Eastford, CT 06242) wishes to learn more about Lucy (Lucie) Ann JOHNSON (born circa 1868, KY), the daughter of Wesley Marion and Martha (SPARKS) JOHNSON. The JOHNSONs moved to Oklahoma around 1880. The had another daughter, Julia B. (born 1870, KY) who married Emmett DALTON of DALTON outlaw fame. Lucy supposedly moved to Arkansas. Can any of our readers provide material on this in-law of an outlaw?

Maggie ALDRICH SMITH (Box 411, Siloam Springs, AR 72761) is the editor of The Chestnut Tree, the official publication of the Pierre CHASTAIN Family Association. Her group was formed in 1975 and consists primarily of descendants of Dr. Pierre CHASTAIN (1663-1728). Persons desiring more information about this organization should write to Maggie at her home in Siloam Springs. Other surnames of interest to Maggie ALDRICH SMITH include ALDRICH, McILWAIN, SANGER,and THOMASON.

Last November Rootbound published a query from Eufaula BICKLEY AILES (2665Texas Drive, Dallas, TX 75211) regarding the parentage of Reuben WRIGHT. Mrs. AILES related that Reuben spent his later years in Farmersville of Colin County, but she neglected to mention the state. Viola FLORY of Stella, MO, noted the omission and has written to inform our readers that Colin County is in Texas. Thanks, Viola. Perhaps some of our readers will see this corrected location and be able to help Eufaula BICKLEY AILES with her genealogy.

Planning a family reunion? Just send those details to Rootbound in the Hills in care of this newspaper, and we'll assist in getting the word out!

Happy trails!
